1978: Teenage Punks, The Buzzcocks and ‘Oh Shit’…
Above Photo: (The only) Two Members of Punk Band Plastic Orgasm, in early 1978. Ged Allen on the left, me on the right.
The above photo was taken in the doorway of my bedroom in Liverpool in January or February 1978. It shows my fellow Punk band member Ged Allen and I posing for a badly taken shot, which I recently discovered on a roll of unexposed film, which accounts for the damage to the colours.
I know it was early 1978 because I’m proudly clutching my Buzzcocks single sleeve for ‘What Do I Get’, which had been recently released.
The B side of What Do I get is called ‘Oh Shit’, and I used it as a mini chapter heading at an appropriate point in my 1970s-1980s Punk and New Wave memoir, Bombed Out!, but I can’t say where or why right, so I don’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read it.
Unbelievably, factory workers refused to press the record in protest at the song title, which actually delayed the single from being released.
Thinking about it, the Buzzcocks’ management should have sent it instead to the factory that had pressed their first single,”Orgasm Addict“, seemingly without objection.
