My First Punk Gig – Manchester Punk Band The Drones.
The Drones: Further Temptations album cover.
I was pleased to find a comprehensive list of all Punk and New Wave bands I went to see between 1977 and the end of 1979 recently.
The biggest surprise was that The Stranglers was the first gig I ever went to, in August 1977, at Mountford Hall (Liverpool Students Union), which was a fantastic night.
However, the first band on the bill that night, and therefore the first Punk band I ever saw live was a band called The Drones from Manchester.
The Drones formed in Manchester, originally as a glam rock band in 1975, before getting into Punk and relocating to London, where they became an influential early Punk band, touring with the Vibrators, X-Ray Spex, Chelsea and the Stranglers.
When their EP Bone Idol was released in October 1977 I bought it and played it to death. I also bought their fantastic Further Temptations album but swapped it for some shit a year or so later, something I regret now, of course, but which must have meant something to me at the time.
Unfortunately, although I mention the Stranglers gig in my Punk and New Wave memoir, Bombed Out!, I couldn’t remember The Drones being on the bill until I discovered my gig list a few months after publishing the book.
What I remember that night was them playing a brilliant set, leaving me almost shocked, at hearing a powerful Punk band blasting out their music at ear-splitting volume, at point blank range for the first time in my life.
