Disney, Mickey Mouse and Joy Division’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’ Artwork.
Above Photo: The irony. Disney would probably never have allowed Joy Division entry.
It’s not often the Disney Organisation bothers me, but a while back I sat up and noticed when they abused one of the most iconic New Wave album covers in music history.
At first I thought it was a joke, but unfortunately it’s wasn’t….
Disney had the cheek to turn the Joy Division Unknown Pleasures album cover into a Mickey Mouse t-shirt, which they were selling at Disney World and Disneyland.
I’m guessing they have no idea what the image was, no idea where it came from, no idea that the band’s singer Ian Curtis tragically hung himself, and especially no idea where the band’s name came from.
But no matter – if you wanted to look like this twat in a Joy Division/Mickey Mouse t-shirt, you could have done – for a very brief time.
Your chance has now gone, because after only two days of being on sale, Disney pulled the controversial t-shirt from their site. I’m guessing they were inundated with a furious and abusive backlash.
Or they realized the image wasn’t as ‘Disney’ as they at first thought.
Whatever, thank fuck.
