Sometimes when writing these supporting articles for my Punk and New Wave memoir, Bombed Out!, I get an idea for a really great article, with interesting photos, and think “Yeah – I’ll write that…”.
Then when I start doing the research I find there’s very little or nothing at all written about it, and there isn’t even the basic research material to allow me to write any kind of article. That’s what happened in this case, when I decided to write about British Punk and New Wave bands who’d played Max’s Kansas City in New York.
It was the same when I searched for photos. I couldn’t find any, except for shots of the Sid Vicious’s gigs in late 1978, which I’ve previously written about. For these gigs he was joined onstage by various British Punk band members including Rat Scabies of The Damned, Paul Cook and Steve Jones of his former band The Sex Pistols and Mick Jones of The Clash.
The only other British Punk band I can find reference to that played at Max’s was The Damned. As Max’s Kansas City was open right the way through the Punk and New Wave heyday of 1977 – 1981, I’m guessing a lot more British bands played there than I can find reference to, but I’ve drawn a blank.
The impressive roster of US bands who played there is well-documented and includes The Velvet Underground (including Lou Reed’s last gigs with them) and basically all the CBGBs regulars,
Of course, during the time MKC was open, many British band members and musicians were photographed in the club itself, on nights out, as shown in the photos accompanying this article (not many New Wave people either), but that’s it.
If anyone can recall seeing British Punk and New Wave bands perform at Max’s, or knows of bands who did, or (especially) if anyone has photos of them, I’d be grateful to hear from them, and I’ll update this article accordingly.
