My friend and former Nightmares in Wax guitarist, Mick Reid, recently posted another couple of previously-unheard NIW rehearsal tracks to You Tube (see link below). They were recorded in our rehearsal space in the basement of 8 Ullet Road, Liverpool, early in 1980.

The quality of the recording suggests it was done on a domestic cassette machine, but it is still excellent Liverpool band music history, and a good indication of what Nightmares In Wax was like, musically-speaking, before being renamed Dead Or Alive.

I have vivid memories of us playing Sound I Can Ride On as part of our live set, and I really liked it. But I have no memory at all of Life Before Man, although Pete Burns’ vocals are very strong on it and it sounds OK to me.

Mick also has no memory of Life Before Man, believing it was a rehearsal experiment that “was most likely tried and abandoned.”

What a wonderful surprise as i walked into the internet cafe, to find two brand new Nightmares In Wax tracks for us fans to enjoy, and they are absolutely incredible, thank you very much.

‘Sound I Can Ride On’ is fantastic and ‘Life Before Man’ wow, what a brilliant track. It’s amazing these recordings have been unearthed, and survive. We are so lucky!

It’s great to hear that it was favourite song played live (Sound I Can Ride On) and that there was also a song on your cassette that you had no memory of (Life Before Man). I wonder, does any conversation exist around these recordings? It would be something to hear from the all the band discussing these songs.

Great to hear these unreleased gems!!

Hi Pete. Just wondered, even though no known recording exists of the Nightmares In Wax track ‘Go West’, can you recall how the track sounded, or even any part of the lyrics, long time ago i know sorry.
    Many thanks as always

I can only remember vaguely, but I know a man who might know more and will ask him….

I got your letter and enclosure – thanks a lot.
