Punks and Booze: Carlsberg Special Brew.

During my research for my Punk and New Wave memoir, Bombed Out! was interested to come across a few photos of Punks and bands drinking Carlsberg Special Brew. I love the stuff, although I certainly wasn’t drinking it back in 1977/1979, unfortunately, as it was too expensive.
First I discovered this photo of The Adverts at (someone else’s) gig in 1977, drinking cans of it.
Then I discovered an ominous photo of a night’s boozing by Sid Vicious, Nancy Spungen and (then) Johnny Rotten in his flat in 1977, where Sid has a can of Special Brew in one hand and a knife at Nancy’s throat with the other.
Obviously that image that must have had Carlsberg Marketing Executives in panic mode only a few months later, when Nancy was stabbed to death in the room she shared with Sid Vicious in New York.
And finally I was amused to see this 1980 photo of Pete Burns, not then a Punk for sure, but New Wave Musician definitely, with a can of Special brew on the floor of the Nightmares In Wax rehearsal room in Liverpool.
I was in the room when that photo was taken, as I was playing bass for the band back then, and I can never remember anyone drinking in the rehearsal room when I was in either Pink Military or Nightmares In Wax, so it may have been left by a thirsty roadie after a gig.
Or another band looking for musical inspiration after getting blitzed on strong lager…
