Punk Memorabilia: Exclusive Photos of Penetration Gigs in Liverpool, 1978.
Above Photo: Pauline Murray of Penetration, at Eric’s Club, Liverpool on 17 June 1978
I recently came across a number of photos I took back in 1978 at two penetration gigs in Liverpool, one at Liverpool University on 5th May 1978, when they supported the Buzzcocks, and one at Eric’s club on 17 June 1978, when they headlined in their own right (supported by a band called The Germs).
I have no illusions about the quality of some of these gig photos, but I strongly feel photographic memorabilia of Punk and new Wave bands playing live back then should be ‘out there’ for Posterity, which is why I’m featuring them in this article.
Penetration were one of my favourite early Punk bands, having been formed in 1976, and they were a superb band to see live. I make frequent reference to them in articles on this site (use the search function on the top right of the page).
They also receive numerous mentions in my Punk and New Wave Memoir, Bombed Out!, and as a young Punk back then, they were truly musically-inspirational.
I saw them live six times in all, between 1978 and 1979, and I enjoyed every gig. They also did me a few favours, signing almost anything I could get my hands on: including my old Eric’s membership card:
Sticky yellow squares which I decorated my bass guitar and amp with, as I learnt to play bass with a mate, Ged, in our nascent Punk band, Plastic Orgasm:
I also had some great Penetration poster memorabilia (now lost), which I pinched from Eric’s after their May gig, with which I gleefully rushed into a photo booth in Liverpool city centre, on my way home from the gig.
The final two photos were taken at Mountford Hall in May 1978 when they supported the Buzzcocks. As my detailed notes on the reverse of one photo tells me, some of the Buzzcocks were also watching the band from the doorway at the back of the stage
