1977 Punk Posters: The Damned Tour With The Adverts.
Above Photo: The Poster for the Damned and the Adverts 1977 tour.
I recently came across this great tour poster from 1977, when the Adverts toured with the Damned, following the release of the Adverts’ first single ‘One Chord Wonders’ in April 1977. I missed this tour and first saw the Adverts in 1978, and caught the Damned in late 1977, back in the heady Punk gig-going days I cover in my Punk and New Wave memoir, Bombed Out!
I always thought it was interesting that the Damned’s single cover for Neat Neat Neat showed only the eyes of the bands’ faces, whereas the Adverts single cover for Gary Gilmore’s Eyes showed all of their faces except their eyes. That was obviously in the days when I’d play a record to death as I lovingly examined every inch of artwork and every word on the record sleeve.
I also recently came across the below photo, presumably taken during the Damned/Adverts tour in 1977, of the Adverts’s bass player, Gaye Advert, sprawling across the stage of the Roundhouse in London at the end of a Damned gig.
