“Fuck a Trucker”: Nancy Sinatra and These Boots Are Made For Walkin’.

Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots Are Made for Walkin’ was released in February 1966 and quickly shot to Number 1 in the US, the UK and many other countries around the world.
It was released when the Vietnam War was raging, but for me it triggers memories of cold winter mornings in Liverpool, when I was 5 years old, getting ready to go to infant school with my older brother and sister, as the song played on an old radio we had in the kitchen.
The song is even more appropriate as the first song to get a mention in Bombed Out! because, even when I wrote the book, I hadn’t really thought about the fact that there are two bass lines in it: a double bass and an electric bass.
Sinatra recorded an early music video for it, the You Tube link to which is below. She was encouraged by the songwriter, Lee Hazlewood, to sing the song as if she were “a sixteen-year-old girl who fucks truck drivers.”
