New Wave Wigs For Sale: A Flock of Haircuts.

It’s not often I laugh out loud at something I’m sent, but a reader recently sent me a link to a website where a wig can be bought to make the wearer look like 1980s Liverpool band A Flock of Seagulls (AFOS) member, Mike Score.
The website, from where I took the wig photos (https://www.80stees.com/products/mike-score-flock-of-seagulls-wig) asks: “What better costume for an 80s Party than Mike Score from Flock of Seagulls? This Flock of Seagulls Wig will make you look just like the lead singer of the English new wave rock band…”
Score has said that his unusual “seagull” or “wings” hairstyle was first created when he was trying to style his hair like that of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust character. AFOS’s bass player, Frank Maudsley, placed his hand on Score’s head, leaving only the hair on the sides of his head sticking up, and a whole iconic 1980s hairstyle was born.
The band didn’t look like that when I used to see them on Sunday nights playing in the Masonic Pub in Liverpool in 1979. They looked more like this (Mike Score on guitar in the middle, pre-hairdo):
The band receive a number of mentions in my Punk and New Wave memoir, Bombed Out! – but not for their hairstyles, which came later…
