Punk Band Photos in 1978: The Adverts.

I recently discovered these photos I’d taken when I first saw the Adverts play live, at Liverpool University on 29 April 1978.
They were supported by The Night and Agency (my gig-notes say), although I can’t remember anything about those bands. It might even be possible that the Adverts were supporting THEM, but I doubt it, as the Adverts were a serious touring band by then, with a big following and a single that had got in the charts (Gary Gilmore’s Eyes) the previous year.
They’d been on Top Of The Pops, had released two other singles (just lately ‘No Time To Be 21’ – which you can see on the pink banner behind TV Smith in the below photo), and they’d also recently released their superb album ‘Crossing The Red Sea With The Adverts’ which I still have my copy of.
I always fancied their bass player, Gaye Advert, so of the many blurred photos I took that night I was delighted to see that one of her had come out pretty well.

This is a You Tube link to the band performing No Time To Be 21 in the Top Of The Pops studios. Intriguingly, at no time do they show Gaye Advert full face-on, although they do with the rest of the band. I wonder why?
